The Pumas Wins the Award for the Second Consecutive Year

April 28, 2015 – TEMECULA, CA –   The Chaparral High School student newspaper, The Platinum Press, has won its second consecutive first-place award in a national competition for high school journalists. The 2014-2015 SCHOLASTIC NEWSPAPER AWARD - FIRST PLACE recognition was presented by the New York-based American Scholastic Press Association (ASPA) in April as part of its Annual Contest/Review for Scholastic Yearbooks, Magazines and Newspapers.

“ASPA judges are selected from among high school journalism teachers, college newspaper advisors, and members of the newspaper industry. They evaluate all aspects of student-produced newspapers -- quality of writing, editing,   photography, layout, and design.  We ‘compete’ for this award nationally, and a first-place award is given to the top 20 percent of the newspapers evaluated each year,” said Ryan Leonhardi, CHS English teacher and newspaper advisor. “This award puts The Platinum Press in the company of many top high-school newspapers in the nation,” he added.

Leonhardi noted that not all schools that enter are recognized. The top billing is First Place with Special Merit, which goes to the top 5-10 percent of schools. Then ASPA First, Second, Third, and Honorable Mention or no awards are earned.  “We are fortunate to have amazing student journalists, and CHS is proud of their commitment and achievement,” he said.

The Platinum Press won its first ASPA First-Place Award in 2013-14. Leonhardi has served as newspaper advisor for the past two years.
