The 2014 High School Football Season Starts Friday Night
The Sunbelt League Football season gets underway this Friday night and everyone is wondering if Heritage will continue its incredible league winning streak. That’s six weeks and five games away. So lets focus on this week’s opening games. Put on your colors and get ready to go out to one of the Sunbelt league’s games and experience “Friday Night Lights” up close and personal. All games start at 7pm.
Heritage At La Quinta
The Patriots travel to La Quinta to open the season against the Blackhawks. The last time these two teams met Heritage won 42-12 on their way to the CIF SS Central Division Championship last year. Head Coach Kraig Broach has a 56-18 record as he enters his seventh year at the head of the football program. The Patriots are a dominate force every season and 2014 should be no exception.
The Blackhawks finished with an 8-4 record and looking to avenge last year’s season ending loss in Menifee.
Paloma Valley At JW North
Coach Bert Esposito takes his team to JW North Friday night to play the Huskies. JW North is hoping to rebound from a very dismal 2-8 season in 2013. The Huskies played solid football team last year but had a very tough schedule.
The Wildcats are 65-47 under Esposito and have an explosive offense and dominating defense. Paloma Valley was 10-2 last season and played into the second round of the CIF playoffs. They plan to go even deeper this season
.
Elsinore Home Against Corona
It’s a “Battle of the Cats” as the Tigers host the Panthers at Elsinore Friday night. Corona was 1-9 last season and has made efforts to improve on offense and defense. The Panthers play in the Big VIII league where the competition is fierce.
Elsinore ended the 2013 season with a record of 6-6. The highlight of the year was their 55-40 victory over Palm Desert in the first round of the CIF SS Playoffs. Head Coach Tony Peralta has a very senior heavy roster with very few returning starters from last year’s team. Peralta’s Tigers always seem to surprise their opponents and get the job done when they have to.
Temescal Canyon At Murieta Valley
The Nighthawks will host the “New Look” Titans from Temescal Canyon on opening night. The Titans head new coach Phil Cohen has done away with the triple option and installed a run oriented offense this season. The Titans are coming off a 4-6 season in 2013 and have embraced their new coach’s football philosophy.
Murrieta Valley also has a new head coach. George Wilson has solidified his defense and is looking forward to the challenges of the new season. He will be unleashing the Nighthawk offense under Offensive Coordinator Robert Partin who did not coach last season when the Nighthawks went 6-4 and failed to make the CIF Playoffs.
Lakeside At Chaffey (Thursday Night Game)
The Lancers will travel to Ontario to mix it up with the Tigers Friday night. Chaffey was 5-5 during the regular season and finished at 5-6 after a 35-6 loss to La Quinta in the CIF SS playoffs.
Coach Andrew Penwarden’s Lancers finished the 2013 season with a 2-8 record. Now in his second season as head coach, Penwarden is working to solidify a program that has never won more than 5 games in a season since the program started in 2005.
Perris Home Against Shadow Hills
Perris will open the season at home against Shadow Hills Friday night. New Head Coach Chris Dowdy inherits a Panther team that won only six games in the past five years. Perris was winless last season and ended the year 0-10.
Shadow Hills went 7-5 last year and finished second in the De Anza league. The football program has steadily improved in each of its five seasons and the Knights won their first CIF SS Playoff game against Brethren Christian 31-24 in 2013.
