Murrieta Valley Poised to Challenge in the Southwestern League
The Nighthawks finished their first season under new head coach J.D. Miranda with a 12-14 record overall in 2013. Murrieta Valley was 3-7 in league and finished fifth in the very tough, competitive Southwestern League and are looking forward to improve this season with a gym full of fresh faces.“We have a brand new team with only four returning players from last season” said Coach Miranda. “We have a number of girls that are ready to step in and make an immediate impact at the varsity level. We look to be very strong on offense and have a core group of girls that will provide a great defensive presence”. The Nighthawks are anchored in the middle by returning 1st team All Southwestern League setter Chelsea Doyle. The senior is committed to UC Riverside. BYU commit Mckenna Miller is on the outside with amazing attacking ability, Third year varsity starter Savannah Hilde is tough and versatile and will play all around for Murrieta Valley.
Murrieta Valley has a number of first time varsity players this season. Some faces to look for are Desiree Sukhov, whose versatility allows Miranda to play her at many positions. and Whitney Campbell who provides stability to the Nighthawk defense. The Softball playing Bishop twins, Amber and Autumn will also be joining the team.
‘Our main goal is simple” said Miranda. “To play the best that we can everyday. Wins and losses will not be our priority. If we play the best we can as a team, everything else will work itself out”. With his first year as head coach behind him, Miranda reflected on the 2013 season. “With all the challenges I faced coming into a great program, I really feel we had a successful year. We implemented my coaching philosophy and ethics for the future. I'm excited to build our program to be as successful as it can be. It's a process that will take time but the girls are ready to go.”.
The Nighthawks will face tough competition in the Southwestern League this season. League Champion Great Oak is hungry to repeat. The programs at Chaparral, Vista Murrieta and Temecula valley are proven winners. Murrieta Mesa improves every season and is looking for a break out year.
“The team we have put together this year is deep in a number of areas” added Miranda. “These girls are ready to work hard and understand that nothing will be given to us. We have to earn everything that we accomplish and the girls are excited to prove themselves on the court. We look forward to competing at the highest level all season”.
Come out and support the Nighthawk Girls Volleyball team this season. Murrieta Valley will begin the year at home on Tuesday, September 2 at 4:30pm.
