The Rams Are Hungry For Southwestern League Success
Murrieta Mesa has quietly evolved into a significant football program over the past few years under the guidance of Coach Justin Schaeffer. The Rams have finished at a respectable 6-4 and 5-5 over the past two seasons and looking to improve in 2014. They are now ready to challenge the older, more established teams in the tough Southwestern League.
“Our goal this year is to get better and to win multiple league games for the first time in school history” said Coach Schaeffer. “This team is young, inexperienced and hungry. We are getting the team focused to qualify for and win in the CIF SS Playoffs this season”.
The Ram offense is young, skilled and dangerous. Coach Schaeffer’s teams have always been able to move the chains and score points. Offensive Coordinator Steve Clower has been in charge of the offense since the Rams first varsity season back in 2010.
Clower has three All-Southwestern League players returning to his potent offense. Junior quarterback Peyton Uhl, senior wide receiver Bryan Phan and junior running back McKinley Ross give the Rams an explosive core to work with. The offensive line is in transition and will being solidified when fall practice resumes. “It’s too soon to tell. We are not in gear yet and everyone is competing for a job” said Schaeffer.
The defense has been improving each season. Seniors Tommy McCraw and Marquette Fisher anchor the Ram defensive line. The secondary is patrolled by seniors Joseph Pinkiva and Robert Fitzgerald and should be tough on the run while shutting down the passing game. The returning starters look to lead and pace Murrieta’s defense.
“We feel we have the best kicker in the area in junior Mateo Thompson” added Schaeffer. “We feel he can win some games for us with his leg”.
Their Southwestern League opponents always seem play the Rams extra tough every year, as no one wants to lose to Mesa. The Rams welcome the challenge and are focused on winning football games this season. Asked which game was important to the program this year Schaeffer responded “Every game, of course! And especially every league game, starting with the first one at Murrieta Valley”.
The Ram season begins in San Bernardino at Indian Springs HS on August 29 but the real action starts on October 10th when the Rams travel across town to begin league play against the Nighthawks.
