HS Football: The Nighthawks May Have Their First Female Quarterback

Megan Aubrey is Fighting for a Spot on the Freshman Team

Megan Aubrey has been playing football with the boys ever since she can remember. The new Murrieta Valley freshman has played quarterback, receiver, and several defensive positions over the past seven years. She started playing on the streets in second grade and then started playing organized flag football.

She is competing for the starting quarterback job on the Nighthawk Freshman team.

Megan has played in 2 Tournament of Champions competitions against teams from all over Southern California.  Last season Megan quarterbacked her team into the final Championship game and took second place.

“I decided to try out for the Frosh team because I have always loved to play football” said Megan “I have been playing football with a lot of these guys for a long time, from in the cul de sac, the playground and in Flag football. I have a lot of confidence in them and hope to celebrate a winning season together.  I know as a team we will be awesome”.

Coach Monte Jones is the Nighthawk Freshman Football team Head Coach. He was also Megan’s first coach in organized football. Jones has known Megan since kindergarten as she attended school with his son Trevor. He smiles when he says that he reminds her “there’s no crying in football”. She is treated just like the boys.

“Megan gets no slack, and she doesn’t ask for it” said Jones. “She takes command of the guys and is like a regular teammate. She has earned the respect of the guys and we are excited to have her here”.

“So far, this season has been amazing” said Megan. “I love all of the support that I receive from my teammates and coaches. Without them, none of this would be possible”. Coach Jones is equally proud of how his young freshman athletes had adapted to having a girl on the squad and accepting her as a teammate. “Sometimes young boys don’t know how to handle situations like this” said Jones. “This group of guys are great and I can see the chemistry evolving”.

Megan is also on the Cross Country team, but may not be able to compete because of conflicts with the freshman football schedule. She is planning to run track, and try out for the softball or the newly formed lacrosse team in the spring.

“I can’t even put into words how much fun I am having” said Megan. “These guys are super supportive and have been amazingly accepting of me on the team. They really have become my second family. I really want to thank my Coaches, friends, teammates, and family for always being there”.

Come out and support Megan and her teammates when the Nighthawk Freshman season begins. The first game is scheduled at home for Thursday August 28 against Temescal Canyon. Game time is at 4pm.
