Southwestern League Teams 4-0 AS They Head Into This Weeks Games

The Southwestern League was 4-0 last week as Chaparral, Murrieta Mesa, Great Oak and Murrieta Valley rolled over their opponents on opening night. This week all six teams will be on the gridiron and the competition intensifies.
Chaparral-Tesoro AWAY
The Pumas devastated Victor Valley 64-0 at home in Week 0. Chaparral dominated from the opening kick off and scored at will in the first half. The defense completely shutdown the Jackrabbit offense. It wont be that easy this week for the Pumas, ranked 23ed in the state by Maxpreps. This week Coach Ryan Tukua’s Pumas travel to Santa Margarita to face the Tesoro Titans.
Tesoro is still stinging from a 26-23 loss to La Mirada last week, and the Titans are glad to be playing Chaparral at home. The Titans took an early lead but the Matadors can back to score and never trailed after the opening quarter. Tesoro beat the Pumas 24-21 in last years contest and are ranked 116th in the state by Maxpreps.
Vista Murrieta-Downey AWAY
The Broncos begin the 2014 season in Downey Friday night and are determined on getting off to the right start. Coach Coley Candaele’s team is focused on their three goals for the season. Win the City, Win the Valley, Win CIF. Vista Murrieta is ranked 13th in the state by Maxpreps and is considered one of the finest high school football programs in the state.
The Vikings beat Mayfair 34-21 last week in their season opener. The Monsoon led 21-13 as the third quarter ended and were thinking upset. Downey finally woke from their slumber and exploded for 21 unanswered points in the final quarter to secure the victory.
Great Oak-ML King Home
Great Oak trailed Carlsbad 14-12 at halftime last week in front of a fanatic home crowd. Coach Robbie Robinson’s Wofpack rose to the challenge and completely dominated in the fourth quarter. Great Oak scored 20 points as the defense shut down the Lancer attack to go on to win it 38-2. The Wolfpack can score a lot of points, very quickly.
It’s the “Battle of the Wolves” as the Wolves open their season against the Wolfpack. King was 6-4 overall last season and did not lose a non-league game. All four losses at the hands of league rivals. The Wolves fell to Centennial, Santiago, Roosevelt and Norco last season and are tougher than their record reflects.
Murrieta Mesa-Rancho Verde AWAY
The Rams are fresh off a 45-12 victory over Indian Springs, their fourth consecutive season opening win since the young program’s inception. Coach Justin Schaeffer’s teams have always been able to move the chains and score points. The Ram defense has solidified , the kicking game is much improved and Murrieta Mesa is anticipating big things this season.
Rancho Verde is coming off an impressive 37-34 victory over last year’s CIF SS Eastern Division Champion Citrus Hill last week. The Mustangs were 11-3 last season and lost to Heritage in the CIF SS Central Division title game. The Rams will be tested this Friday night.
Temecula Valley-Temescal Canton AWAY
The Golden Bears open their season with the first of 10 “away” games at Temescal Canyon Friday night. Temecula Valley has a new Head Coach in Rick Mey this season and they are looking to improve on last year’s 3-7 record. The Golden Bears dominated last season’s game against the Titans winning 32-0.
Temescal Canyon also has a new Head Coach this season and Phil Cohen is looking for his first “W”. The Titans kept it close for three quarters against the Nighthawks until Murrieta Valley put 20 points on the board in the fourth quarter to defeat Temescal Canyon 46-20.
Murrieta Vailley -Citrus Hill AWAY
Head Coach George Wilson’s Nighthawks got their coach his first “W” against Temescal Canyon in last week’s season opener. The Nighthawk offense was led by Aaron Young’s four touchdown receptions. Quincy Wimbish ran for two TDs and Xavier Crawford scored one. Murrieta Valley’s defense shut down the Titans in the final quarter to seal the victory.

Citrus Hill is the reigning CIF SS Eastern Division Champion and finished the season 13-1 last year. They fell to Rancho Verde 37-34 in the season opener.
