HS Water Polo: Nighthawks Defeated In Sudden Death Overtime 12-11

Murrieta Valley Falls to Montebello on a Questionable Call

The Murrieta Valley Nighthawks run for the CIF SS Division III Championship ended Wednesday night as the Oilers Mario Moran scored the game winner in the third overtime period. Moran was also involved in the questionable call with a minute left in regulation.
“We had possession of the ball, there was one second left, there’s no way any official in their right mind calls a foul” said Murrieta Valley head coach Bryan Lynton. “The game was over. It was won. But that’s what we get when we don’t have impartial officials. We have an official from their area making blatant calls for them.”€
Murrieta Valley came into the final period trailing 9-7 but rallied to go ahead 10-9. The disputed foul resulted in a penalty shot which Moran sank into the Nighthawk net as time expired. The Oilers and Nighthawks were both scoreless in the first overtime period and then traded goals in the second overtime period to send the game to sudden death.

Ryan Sargis scored five goals for Murrieta Valley, Hudson Rawlings three and Casey Lynton scored two. Nighthawk goalie Taylor Miller had 14 saves. The Nighthawks will have to wait until next season to seek revenge and challenge for the CIF SS Division III crown.
