The 2014 High School Football Season Starts Friday Night

A Preview of This Week’s Southwestern League Football Games

The Southwestern League Football season gets underway this Friday night and four of the five teams  will be at home. So put on your colors and get out to one of the games and catch the action and experience ‘Friday Night Lights” up close and personal. All games start at 7pm.

Murrieta Valley-Temescal Canyon
The Nighthawks will host the “New Look” Titans from Temescal Canyon on opening night. The Titans new head  coach Phil Cohen has done away with the triple option and re-installed a run oriented offense this season. They always play the Nighthawks tough. The Titans are coming off a 4-6 season in 2013 and have embraced their new coach’s football philosophy.

Murrieta Valley also has a new head coach. George Wilson has solidified his defense and is looking forward to the challenges of the new season. He will be unleashing the Nighthawk offense under Offensive Coordinator Robert Partin who did not coach last season when the Nighthawks went 6-4 and failed to make the CIF Playoffs.

Murrieta Mesa-Indian Springs
The Rams are at home and will play Indian Springs this week. The Coyote Football program is in their third year and is beginning to mature. The Coyotes were 1-10 last season with their lone victory coming against Albert Einstein Academy and were shut out six time last year.

Coach Justin Schaeffer’s Rams finished the season 5-5 with all five losses coming at the hands of Southwestern League opponents. Schaeffer and his team are determined to fix that this season. The Rams have always been able to move the chains and score lots of points and the defense is solid this season.

Great Oak-Carlsbad
Great Oak will have their hands full Friday night when the Wolfpack hosts Carlsbad. The Lancers won last season’s game 41-17 and went on to a 9-3 record. Carlsbad is quick, big and tough and looking to compete for the Avocado West League Title.

Coach Robbie Robinson’s Wolfpack is coming off a 6-5 season and a third place finish in the tough Southwestern League. Great Oak is looking to improve on last season and go deeper into the CIF playoffs this year. The defense is solid and their offense dangerous and the Wolfpack is looking to avenge last year’s loss.

Chaparral-Victor Valley
The Pumas will be home to play Victor Valley to open the season. The Jackrabbits are the reigning Desert Sky League Champions and finished 2013 with a 7-4 record. They were 5-0 in league and lost their CIF SS game to Apple Valley 10-7.

The Pumas are packed with talent and looking to oust perennial league champion Vista Murrieta this season. Coach Ryan Tukua’s defense is quick, strong and experienced  while his offense is blessed with one of the best O Lines the team has ever had. The Pumas were 8-4 last season and determined to be better in 2014.

Temecula Valley-Norco
The Golden Bears begin the first of their 10 “Away” games in Norco this Friday night. Temecula Valley has always been blessed with one of the Southwestern League’s toughest pre-league schedules and this year is no exception. Norco was 9-3 last season and rolled over Great Oak Great Oak 56-27 in the CIF Playoffs before running into Vista Murrieta two games later.

Temecula Valley’s new Head Coach Rick Mey is positive about the team and is looking to improve on last years’s 3-7 record. It’s going to be a tough journey this season as the Golden Bears will play all home games “away” at Chaparral and Grea Oak.

Vista Murrieta
The Broncos have a bye this week. They will be at ML King on Thursday for a scrimmage.
