Varsity Lacrosse Arrives at Murrieta Mesa

Molly Sovacool Tapped To Develop The Rams Lacrosse Program

Murrieta Mesa has a new varsity sport in 2014 and the Rams are hard at work getting ready for the season which starts in the spring. Molly Sovacool has been named to head the program and will also coach the girl’s varsity team.

Sovacool was female athlete of the year at Fallbrook High School in 2004 and lettered   in field hockey, basketball, lacrosse and track. She was named MVP of her field hockey, basketball and lacrosse teams. She went on to play Lacrosse at Fresno State who were just developing their program.
Sovacool coached Lacrosse for two years at Hoover High School in Fresno and has coached the club teams in Temecula for the past four years.

“I coached the 395 Starz this summer which comprised of students from Mesa, Temecula Valley, Chap, Great Oak, and Fallbrook . “We had an amazing summer and went undefeated at Pac Lax and had a huge taste of success. This area is on the rise”.

Before coming to Murrieta Mesa Sovacool took over Temecula Valleys program last season as their Head girls coach and proceeded to drive the Golden Bears into the first round of CIF playoffs. “Once Mesa opened up a program I wanted to be apart of it from the very beginning” said Sovacool. “I understand the growing pains of a new program and look forward to this upcoming year”

Mesa started Lacrosse the first week summer. The Ram program began with a 2 week camp. There were around 27 boys and 35 girls who participated in the inaugural camp. There were athletes with years of experience and some that had never played lacrosse before.

“By the second week the girls were showing huge signs of improvement with their stick skills and footwork” said Sovacool. “Many girls are multi sport athletes coming form soccer, basketball, tennis, golf. “I have never seen a group of athletes, males and females, so passionate about a sport and dedicated to their school and program. I am extremely excited to start the school year and continue working with the Rams”.

Ted Lyon and Steve Ellis played a huge role in starting up the program. “The Staff at Mesa have been very encouraging. We are extremely thankful that MVUSD’s District Office has approved Lacrosse and are supporting the sport which is growing exponentially. The parents that are leading the booster program have made this start up a whole lot easier”.

Mesa will have a Free Clinic on the 24th of August to introduce boys and girls to the sport. It is open to the community. Updates and details will be published in a few days.  Information can also be obtained on Murrieta Mesa’s school webpage  http://www.murrieta.k12.ca.us/Domain/3046 .
