The  CHS Student-Directed Play Runs May 7, 8, and 9

TEMECULA, CA – Chaparral High School will debut the hilarious play Black Comedy as its spring student-directed production beginning May 7 in the school’s Performing Arts Center. Written by Peter Shaffer, the comedy of errors takes place in a London flat during a spring evening in 1966.

With a storm thundering outside, Brindsley Miller, a young sculptor, and his debutante fiancée, Carol Melkett, have “borrowed” without permission expensive antique furniture from his neighbor Harold’s flat to impress an elderly millionaire art collector coming to view Brindsley’s work. The situation slides into disaster for Brindsley when the power fails and the flat goes dark, Harold returns early, and Brindsley’s ex-mistress, Clea, shows up unexpectedly.

“The play opens on a darkened stage, and is written to be staged under a reversed lighting scheme. A few minutes into the show, the storm causes a short circuit, and the stage is illuminated to reveal the characters in a ‘blackout’. The audience sees what the characters cannot.  The show is a hilarious comedy of misdirection, misunderstanding, and mistaken identity,” said Chris Irvin, CHS drama/musical theater teacher.

General admission tickets are $10 for adults; tickets for students with valid student ID, Seniors 55+, military personnel, and children under 12 are $8. Tickets may be purchased in advance from the school bookkeeper during regular schools hours (7:15 AM – 3:30 PM) or at the box office before each performance.

The show runs May 7, 8, and 9 at 7 PM, with an addition 2 PM matinee on May 9.

Directed by senior Alexandra Flores with assistant director senior Karleigh Shepard,Black Comedy stars senior Zachary Downing, and features sophomores Julianna Smith and Rafael Loza; juniors Sidney Aptaker, Shannon McMahon, and Tag Pruitt; and seniors Nick Blum and Enrique Duenas.
