By Tyler Zickel - Storm Digital Media / Lake Elsinore Storm
LAKE ELSINORE, CA - The Lake Elsinore Storm took advantage of a four-run first inning Friday night to propel them to a 6-2 victory over the High Desert Mavericks.
Lake Elsinore's early offense began after Jose Rondon reached on an error to start the home half of the first. Auston Bousfield followed with a single that put runners on the corners with no outs, and another error by the Mavs, this time on a Marcus Davis ground ball, allowed Rondon to score. With runners at first and third and one run across, Nick Schulz grounded into a double play, plating Bousfield and putting The Eyes up 2-0.
The inning continued when Fernando Perez lined a double to the right centerfield gap, and the Storm second baseman would score after Gabriel Quintana laced an RBI single to left. After Robert Kral walked, Donavan Tate, who was playing in his first professional game since 2013, delivered a single of his own to make it 4-0.
Zech Lemond (W, 1-1), who took over for San Diego Padres pitcher Shawn Kelley (MLB rehab), turned in his most impressive California League outing to date. The Houston native worked seven strong innings en route to his first win of 2015. Lemond scattered five hits, allowed one unearned run, struck out six and didn't walk a batter.
The Storm added two more in the fourth. After two quick outs to begin the frame, Yale Rosen hit his fourth double of the season. Rondon followed with an RBI triple, then scored on Bousfield's second hit of the game.
Luis Hernandez took over for Lemond in the ninth. High Desert managed to push one run across, but it was far from enough as Lake Elsinore sealed a 6-2 win.
The series continues tomorrow night at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore. Ronald Herrera (2-1, 3.27 ERA) will start for the Storm (10-12) and Cole Wiper (0-0, 2.89 ERA) will go for High Desert. First pitch is slated for 6:00pm.
