Murrieta Mesa Drops Another Heartbreaker, Falls to 1-10 in the Southwestern League

Murrieta Mesa pitcher Austen Salcedo made his first start of the season and gave up just one run while taming the big Bronco Bats Friday. Unfortunately that was just not good enough. The Southwestern League’s ERA leader Jack Moberg was on the mound for the Broncos.

Moberg proceeded to shut down the Ram offense as he threw a one hit shutout to beat Murrieta Mesa 1-0. It was a classic duel as each team came up with big defensive plays and both pitchers were impressive. The Broncos scored the only run they needed in the fourth inning.

Freshman Jake Moberg helped out his older brother as he doubled and then advanced to third on  Connor Cannon’s single. He then stole home and scored. Jake was the only player to get two hits in the game. Salcedo left the game in the fifth inning and was replaced by Luke Reinert. The Mesa reliever proceeded to throw two scoreless innings but the damage had been done.

It was Moberg’s fifth victory of the season and drops his ERA to a miniscule .99. Moberg is the Southwestern League leader in both pitching categories. The victory keeps Vista Murrieta in a tied for first place with Murrieta Valley. The Broncos are 8-3 and the Nighthawks 7-3. Vista Murrieta will play two games with Chaparral next week.

Murrieta Mesa’s league record falls to 1-10. The Rams will face Great oak twice next week on Wednesday and Friday. The Wolfpack beat Temecula Valley 8-2 yesterday and are 5-5 in league play.
