The 4th of July has just past but most of the Southwestern League Football programs are on the field getting ready for the fall season in the summer heat. At Vista Murrieta Coach Coley Candaele’s Broncos are on the field getting ready to defend their crown.

Vista Murrieta has won eight straight League titles and were the CIF Southern Section Inland Division Champions in 2012. Vista Murrieta is looking tougher than ever this season and Candaele’s goals have never changed: Win City, Win League, Win CIF.

The Wolfpack is coming off the best season in school history and is loaded with talent. Coach Robbie Robinson won the Sempra Fi Coach of the Year Award from the US Marine Corps last season for his efforts. Great Oak was 10-3 overall and went deep into the CIF SS West Valley Division Playoffs before losing to Mission Viejo in the Semifinal game.

Coach Justin Schaeffer’s Rams finished the season with a disappointing 4-6 record. After an impressive 4-1 non league record to start the season,  the Rams never seemed to recover after dropping a heartbreaking 50-47 overtime loss to Murrieta Valley in the league opener. Murrieta Mesa ended the season with a 0-5 record in league play. The Schaeffer and his coaching staff are looking to fix that this year.

Chaparral is hoping that new Head Coach Jeremy McCullough will turn around a proud football program that was decimated with injuries last year. McCullough returns to the Pumas after spending the last two years building The Wolfpack into a Southwestern League powerhouse. Chaparral finished 3-7 overall and 2-3 in league.

Temecula Valley was the Southwestern League’s most improved team last season under new Head Coach Rick Mey. The Golden Bears were 6-5 overall and 2-3 in league. Their 38-10 victory over Murrieta Valley gave the Golden Bears their first CIF SS playoff berth since 2005. Temecula Valley is poised for improvement his season.

Nighthawk Coach George Wilson wasted no time after the season ended to put Murrieta Valley Football back on a winning track. Wilson revamped his over-worked coaching staff with key additions and fresh ideas and is looking forward to his second year running the Nighthawk program. Murrieta Valley fell to 4-6 overall and was 2-3 in league.
