HS Girls Basketball: Vista Murrieta Captures Third Southwestern League Championship

The Rams Knock Chaparrel Out Of the CIF Playoffs 48-41. Great Oak Holds Off Murrieta Valley 44-41
10857309_445920562221902_1753453673868183674_oJunior Jaelyn Brown scored 16 points and had five assists as she led Vista Murrieta over an overwhelmed Temecula Valley team 69-32 Friday night. The Southwestern League Champions celebrated another undefeated season of league play and look towards the CIF playoffs.

Senior Kali Jones scored 15 points and grabbed 7 rebounds while Nasrin Ulel added 11 points. Raven Herrington scored eight points as Brittney Reed and Alexis Marshall each had seven. Victoria Chea added three and Keilani Cooper made both of her free throws.

Great Oak 44 Murrieta Valley 41
The Wolfpack held off a determined Murrieta Valley team with a swarming defensive effort in the final quarter to defeat the Nighthawks 44-41. The victory improved Great Oak to 7-3 and the sole owner of second place in the Southwestern League. The Nighthawks finished at 5-5 and in third place.

It was close all evening long as Great Oak got off to a 3 point lead in the first half, 26-23. Murrieta Valley cut the lead to one point as the final period began 36-35 but the Wolfpack’s swarming defensive effort held off the Nighthawks.

Sophomore Amanda Constant led Great Oak with 16 points. Senior Mikayla Williams acored 14 and Deja Burnside added eight. Chelron Alcantara and Elizabeth Tuccinardi each scored two points for the Wolfpack.

Senior captain Ariana Hernandez led the Nighthawks with 16 points. Alex Morrison scored 10 points, Brianna Bilton 10 and Simone Jimerson six. Julia Cardenas, Alyssa Kreutzer and Nellie Jones scored two points apiece.

Murrieta Mesa 48 Temecula Chaparral 41
The game of the night in the Southwestern League was at Murrieta Mesa. The underdog Rams rose to the occasion and defeated Chaparral 48-41 to knock the Pumas out of the race for the third CIF Ss Playoff spot.

The Rams took control of the game in the second period scoring 15 points and holding the Pumas to 6. The score was 27-17 as the second half began. The Pumas came back in the third period but it was just too little, too late for Chaparral. Final score 48-41.

Murrieta mesa was led by senior and Air Force Academy bound Mikayla Greens who had 13 points and 13 rebounds. Octavia Williams scored 12 points, three assists and two steals. Kiersta Tanner added nine points, Bryana Hairston six, Emily Hasinsky five and Jessica Brogden score three.
