Michael Norman was named the Gatorade’s National Track & Field Boys Athlete of the Year Tuesday morning. The Gatorade Player of the Year award was established in 1985 and annually recognizes the top athlete in a sanctioned High School Sport in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Norman was presented his award from Gatorade Representative Keri Lockett in front of a packed gymnasium. "Since the inception of this award 30 years ago, Gatorade sought to honor the very best of what high school sports has to offer" said Lockett. "By very best, we look further than just athletic excellence. We look for candidates like your classmate Michael, who also demonstrate high levels of academic achievement and exemplary character."

Norman led Vista Murrieta to their first California State Boys Team Title by winning the 200 meters in 20.30 seconds and the 400 with a time of 45.19 seconds at the State finals in Clovis earlier this month. Both times are California Stat records. Norman also ran the opening leg on the Broncos 400 relay team and anchored the 1,600 relay team.
Norman thanked his coach, Coley Candaele and teammates for making him a better athlete and competitor. "I am truly honored to be given this trophy, it really means a lot," said Norman. "I can't really stop smiling. It is something I have dreamed of, being up there with some of the best athletes.".

The Bronco junior maintains a 3.54 GPA and is active in the local community. Norman is also a member of Vista Murrieta’s school’s community assistance club and is involved in various activities to help and assist the needy. He is also involved with the Special Olympics and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
