The Special Olympics began in the early 1960s by Eunice Kennedy Shriver. She noticed that people with intellectual disabilities were being treated unfairly and did not have a place to play. She began a summer day camp in her backyard which eventually grew into The Special Olympics. The first International Special Olympics Summer Games were held in 1968.
