Tonight’s Blue Moon Promises to be a Gorgeous Sight

Amateur astronomers and Lunar fans should have an amazing view of tonight’s Blue Moon. It’s the first we have had in almost three years and we won’t have another untill January of 2018. We will have two Blue Moons in that year.

A “Blue Moon” isn’t really blue. It’s called a Blue Moon when there are two full moons in the same month. The last time this happened was back in August of 2012. What this means is that we will experience 13 Full moons this year instead of the normal 12.

The term “Blue” seems to date way back to the 16th-century. Farmers noticed that a second full moon in the lunar monthly cycle and used the word “belewe,” which meant ‘to betray”. They used the term  to refer to a moon that was out of place and didn’t correctly mark the end of a farming season.
Blue or Belwe, enjoy the tonight’s astronomical delight.
