With 11 minutes left in the second quarter and the Golden Bears leading 27-0, the lights went out. The situation was blamed on the heat and humidity that the Inland Empire was experiencing.
It lasted for 20 minutes and the Eagles wished the lights never came back on. With the power restored, Temecula Valley would score another 28 points to take a commanding 55-7 lead at the half.
Lika Palmer ran for 5 touchdowns and 202 yards behind a line that gave him the opportunities to explode through the gaps they created. This was Palmer’s second consecutive 2oo yard performance as he is becoming one of the top running backs in the Southwestern League.
Palmer scored the first two times he touched the ball on runs of 50 and 32 yards. He added three more touchdown runs of 22, 11 and 13 yards once the lights came back on.
The Golden Bears moved the ball in the air too. Coach Rick Mey is still using 2 quarterbacks. Shane Oberhuber connected with Travis Plantier for a 22-yard pass and senior quarterback Vinny Bowes hit Zak Simon for a score.
Simon also scored a rushing touchdown early in the game. . Senior running back Chris Claros had a 13 yard touchdown run and sophomore Trevor Matagulay’s 80-yard touchdown sprint closed out the game.
The Eagles managed to score 27 points in the second period off of a gritty Golden Bears defense. Junior quarterback Roman Aguirre managed to complete 17 of 34 passes for 237 yards and three touchdowns, his first a 24 yard toss to Alvaro Padilla.
The Golden Bears are now 2-0 and headed home to play Hemet. The Bulldogs are 1-1 and coming off a 37-24 loss to Ramona. Game time is 7pm
