The Nighthawks Stunned as the Cougars Escape with the Last Minute Victory

12049346_540213922792565_6887780272362931709_nMurrieta Valley let victory slip away against Rancho Cucamonga Friday night.  The Nighthawks led Rancho Cucamonga all game long and seemed to have it won 28-26 when Murrieta intercepted Angel Matute’s pass with just under two minutes to play.

The ball was stripped from Jaylen Moore on the return by the Cougar’s Colin Wong, Cucamonga recovered the ball at midfield and the Cougars were given one more chance.

With seconds ticking off the clock, Rancho Cucamonga wasted no time and drove the ball into the end zone to take the lead for the first time in the game 34-28 with thirty seconds left in the game.

The Nighthawks took an early 14-0 lead as running back on Quincy Wimbish’s 15 yard scamper up the middle and quarterback Hank Bachmeier’s keeper for a score after engineering a 83 yard, eight play drive.

Up 14-0 with 33 second left to play in the first half, the Nighthawk defense sputtered. He Cougars scored twice on a 9-yard scoring pass from Matute to Tyree Baker. They then added a 24-yard field goal by Joey Mendoza to close the gap to 14-10 as the half ended.

Murrieta was back in control in the third quarter and took a 21-10 lead when   Bachmeier hit Campbell Sawyer on a 17 yard touchdown pass. The Nighthawks made it 28-19 after Wimbish’s 1-yard TD run in the fourth and it looked like the game was theirs.

12002584_540212529459371_1243451931255716566_oWe played well against Rancho Cucamonga but we needed to finish” said Wimbish. “We had the lead, We had the momentum but didn’t finish them off.. We didn’t get it done. But we did learn from this experience”.
The Cougars came back with 15 unanswered points in the final 9-minutes to beat Murrieta Valley 34-28.The one consolation that the Nighthawks have is that they  showed the CIF SS West Valley Division that they have arrived in Friday night’s loss.

12032255_540211772792780_5379706274014254258_n“Rancho Cucamonga is one of the top teams in our Division” said MVHS Head Coach George Wilson. “We played well and led for 48 minutes. I’m proud of the team.  There were a few calls against us and we made a couple of bad plays but I think we can compete with anyone in the Division”.

The Nighthawks’ freshman quarterback Hank Bachmeier is in complete control of his offense. He  completed 16 o his f 20 attempts for 269 yards and a TD.His favorite receiver Marquis Spiker caught 11 of his passes for 200 yards
Cougar quarterback Angel Matute threw for 254 yards and two touchdowns.

Murrieta is now 3-1 and will head to Moorepark next Friday. The Musketeers are 3-1 and are coming off a 41-38 hard fought win over Huntington Beach. Rancho Cucamonga will be playing La Serna.
