Vista Murrieta Head Coach Coley Candaele has built one of the preeminent High School Football Programs in Southern California and the Nation. Candaele came to Vista Murrieta when the school opened 12 years ago and began building a dynasty. The Broncos have won eight Southwestern League championships and have a 30 game winning streak against Southwestern League opponents.

The last time that Vista Murrieta lost a Southwestern league game was to Murrieta Valley way back in November of 2008, and it doesn’t look like anyone in the league is strong enough to stop the streak this season.
“We return seven guys on offense and six guys on defense” said Coach Candaele. “These guys have been to the CIF championship game. They’ve been there and know what is expected to get there again. We have the capability of doing great things again this year”.
The Broncos return five out six starters on the offensive line. “The O-line is probably the best that it’s looked ever’ said Candaele. They are big, tough and physical up front and have a total of 14 games under their belts. They know what to do on the field”. Michael Green, Colton Deleers, Chuck Filaga, Rachaun Wagstaff and tight end Garrett Long make up the Bronco line.

Last year’s starting quarterback Kyle Williams will be moving to wide receiver this season. “Kyle is by far the best wide receiver that we have ever had had Vista Murrieta. His route running, his effort, his ability to catch the ball and his ability to make the big plays, he is just a phenomenal kid, player and athlete”.
Carson Greedly will open the season as the starting Bronco quarterback. “If Carson can’t get the job done, Kyle will move back there” said Candaele. “Carson will open the season as our starter”. Behind him is running back Cole Dubots. “Cole placed fifth in the state in the 100 meter run. He’s explosive and one of the fastest players on the field” added Candaele.
“The surprise at wide receiver this season is sophomore Shaquer Kalil” said Candaele. “He was a great freshman player and has not slowed down as he has adjusted to varsity. He’s a dominant wide receiver and the combination of Kyle and Kalil have been dynamic”.
“Defensively Dwayne Johnson has turned up the level of play this year and has taken over the leadership role in his senior year. He’s a completely different player” said Candaele. Cornerback Jalen Russell has also stepped up this preseason.” The two have been just unbelievable. They are running the team. I’m proud of those two for their development in character and play on the field”.
“Another big surprise in the secondary is Kevin Hicks who has moved up from the JV team has been lights out during the summer” Candaele said. “Usually the JV guys take a long time to adjust to the varsity but he has moved right in. Look for great things from our 3 corners’.
“Our linebackers are deepest group of Linebackers that we have ever had here at Vista” said Candaele.
“We have 8 kids that can start for us. Tanner Williams moved from starting safety to linebacker and Caleb Johnson is the best athlete of the group.”
Kevin Atkins a returning starter anchors the Bronco defensive line.
“Kevin has gained weight, gotten stronger and faster and has much more football intelligence” said Candaele. “The interior front is one of our big questions. We plan to rotate 6 to 8 guys in the middle”.
The Broncos were the 2011 CIF SS Inland Division Champions and have been involved in six straight CIF SS Championship Playoff Games. No doubt Coach Candaele that the Broncos plan to go deep into this year’s CIF SS Playoffs. ‘It just depends on how hungry they are” said Candaele.
“You never know the hunger aspect of 16 & 17 and 18 year old kids. If this team is hungry and passionate and willing to put in the work, the sky’s the limit. If they are not, there are a lot of stumbling blocks along the way, and a lot of ways that can lead to a short season”.
Vista Murrieta will begin the season against the Beavers from Ballard High School from Seattle Washington on September 4th. Game time is 7pm.
