The game was back and forth close through 3 quarters, but Santiago pulled away in the final quarter to win 56-34. Turnovers killed the Pumas.
Key interceptions and 3 lost fumbles spoiled an otherwise productive night by the offense. In the end, the heat and humidity seemed to slow the Pumas in the 4th quarter and they could no longer trade long punches with the Sharks.
Lloyd Hightower scored three times for Chaparral. He had a spectacular 65 yard TD run, caught a short pass for another and returned a kickoff for his third TD. Isaiah Hall ran for two touchdowns and Austin Bacher had a two yard TD. Bacher's TD came on some strong blocking from guard Bryce Quasney.
Santiago quarterback Jacob Hennie found seams in Chaparral’s defense all night long and beat them with long plays. He sliced up the Pumas secondary as he threw for four touchdowns and over 300 yards. Sharks running back Mason Hale also had a great game against the Pumas racking up huge yardage and scoring twice on the ground.
The Pumas find themselves with a record of 2-3 as they head into Southwestern League play. Chaparral has a week off to get ready and will open against the Golden Bears at Temecula Valley on October 9. Temecula lost to Paloma Valley 34-21 last night.
The Pumas’ Lloyd Hightower’s Heroics Not Enough to Lift Chaparral over the Sharks
The Pumas showed they have an array of good offensive weapons when they faced Santiago Friday night, but their normally solid defense had a breakdown.
