Down 36-21, San Diego CIF Section’s No. 3-ranked team came roaring back. St. Augustine scored two quick TDs to pull within 2-points of an incredible comeback. It was the Broncos defense that once again stepped up, rose to the occasion and salvaged the victory. But the nail-biter continued.
Undeterred, the St. Augustine quarterback came back and hit Tariq Thompson with a TD pass with a minute left to make it a 36-28 game. The ensuing Saints' onside kick was recovered by St. Augustine on their 46-yard line.
With the Saints facing a fourth and 14, the Broncos seemed to have the Saints contained. Thompson then threw a “Hail Mary” to Jalen Baker in the end zone and the Saints trailed 36-34 with five seconds left in the game.
The Saints two-point conversion for the tie was stopped by a Bronco defensive back Tony Mitchell who forced a fumble in the backfield and stopped St. Augustine running back Francoise Sims II to preserve the victory.
“I think it's good for your team to have to deal with adversity and learn how to win a tight game,” said Bronco Head Coach Coley Candaele. “We made it interesting, but we made the stop when we needed to.”
Early in the game it looked like Vista Murrieta would cruise to their fourth win of the season. The Broncos took an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a 56-yard run by Cole Dubots, and a 16-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Karson Greeley to tight end Garrett Long.
The Saints got back into the game with a 16-yard pass from Thompson to wide receiver Tariq Thompson. It was 14-7 at the half. The Broncos extended their lead to 17-7 with a 38-yard Cane Page field goal before the Sains’ Darrell Broussard ran back the kickoff 99-yards for a touchdown with 3:19 left in the third period.
Vista Murrieta scored twice early in the final period to extend its lead to 36-21 before the Saints rallied and the Bronco Defense finally held.
Vista Murrieta will travel to Great Oak (2-3) next Friday to begin Southwestern league play. The Wolfpack had a bye this week and are well rested and looking to upset the defending Champion Broncos.
