HS Baseball: Murrieta Valley Knocks Off the Broncos 9-2

The Nighthawks in First Place of the Southwestern League Race

Vista Murrieta came into the 2015 as the favorites to win the league... but anything can happen in the tough Southwestern League. The Nighthawks are ranked 10th in the latest CIF SS Division I Baseball polls. The Press Enterprise has the Broncos at number 2 in the Inland Empire with Murrieta Valley sixth and Chaparral in the nine spot.

But we all know that the only thing that counts is what happens on the diamond. Murrieta Valley’s Nikko Cottone scattered six hits over seven innings giving up just two runs to beat the Broncos 9-2 Wednesday afternoon.The win put the Nighthawks alone at the top of the Southwestern League. For now at least.

The Nighthawks scored a run in the first only have Vista Murrieta tie it the second. Murrieta Valley feasted on Bronco pitching in the third, scoring five runs to take a commanding 6-1 lead. They scored again in the fourth and two more in the sixth to put the game away. Vista Murrieta got its second run in the third inning.

Max Maitland went 2-for-3, scored three runs and drove in a run for Murrieta Valley. Walker Keller had three hits and four RBIs. Aaron Shackelford and Dominic Morace each drove in a run for the Nighthawks.

Jack Moberg drove in a run with a double and Alex Jaques had the Broncos other run batted in. Jake Moberg gave up runs on six hits over 2 and two thirds innings and picked up the loss. Vista Murrieta used five pitchers in the game.

In other Southwestern League action Temecula Valley slipped past Murrieta Mesa 3-1.  Jarrod Iwasaki was the winning pitcher and Bate Stilonvich picked up the loss.

CHS 7 GOHS 6
Great Oak lost to Chaparral in a close one 7-6. Ryan Zapata got the win for the Pumas and Marc Sauceda earned the save. Drake Mekkers was the loser for the Wolfpack.
